Don’t miss this event on September 15 at the Saint Paul JCC:
On Thursday, September 15th at 7:00pm Jewish bluesman Saul Kaye and his band will rock the Saint Paul Jewish Community Center. Kaye is to Jewish Blues, what Matisyahu is to Jewish Reggae. The cost of the concert is $15 for St. Paul JCC members and $20 for the community.
When you think of Jewish music, what comes to mind? Violin, clarinet, accordion? Saul Kaye hears slide guitars. For him, the soulful sounds of the Mississippi Delta are the perfect accompaniment for the trials of biblical characters—of the Jewish people. When Saul Kaye plays “Go Down Moses,” it may not be the version you’re used to hearing, but it definitely resonates.
As Kaye’s website states, “Kaye has dipped the Torah into the Delta.”
“Jews have been enslaved in many countries over the centuries… So, like the African slave experience proved to be a catalyst for blues, so the path of Jewish history fostered its own form of soulful tears.” Kaye states on jewishblues.org.
Like many young Jews, he “proclaimed emancipation from the temple” after his bar mitzvah, but gradually started to come back to Judaism over the years. He found his Jewish heritage resonated with his love for African-American blues, saying that Jews and black Americans have long shared a spiritual kinship bound together by the struggle for freedom and against discrimination.
Saul Kaye “is a tremendously soulful and talented player. You won’t be disappointed. You wouldn’t think songs about the internal struggle between good and evil impulses could make you want to dance but Saul Kaye and his band found a way to make it happen!” says the St. Paul JCC Jewish cultural arts director, Jeffrey Richman.

The St. Paul JCC is a center for Jewish cultural art performances within the Twin Cites. From contemporary artists like Israel’s Hadag Nahash and jazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur to stand up comedian Yisrael Campbell to award wining author appearances, many are surprised by the diversity of programs. Saul Kaye’s appearance is sponsored by the Albert and Esther Goffstein Fund for Jewish-Yiddish Cultural Programs.
