TC Jewfolk’s third annual storytelling show was magical!
On June 22, I felt so very lucky to be sitting amongst more than 500 people listening to the 12 stories told from the bima at TC Jewfolk’s live storytelling show, Stories from the Tribe, in what was an incredibly powerful night.
Our community gathered together to laugh, cry, and bear witness to this show, these storytellers, and these stories.
If the roar of laughter and the collective sighs from the audience didn’t tell me that our community appreciated coming together for this beautiful night, the countless emails, texts, and requests to discuss the stories that the cast and I have received since the show did!
The concept of Jewfolk’s Stories from the Tribe live storytelling show is very simple:
A bima, a microphone, and a story.
Together, the 12 cast members’ stories told all of our collective story about being – or having – a Jewish mother in the Twin Cities.
The topics covered spanned lifecycles from becoming a parent for the first time to the untimely passing of a loved one – and so very much more.
And the result left all of our hearts so very full.
Galit Breen, Jewfolk’s engagement director, produced the show and worked with storytellers to bring out the best in their stories. The result was a show and storytellers that gifted the audience an evening of togetherness and community that we were all so lucky to share: Hearing the same stories, reacting as a group, participating oh-so-very fully in Jewish joy, and honoring a core value that TC Jewfolk holds very dearly:
Multiple entry points into Jewish life.
From moments of cheeks-hurting laughter to quiet thoughtfulness and everything in between, our community fell in love with this cast, these stories, and this show.
Our show will be back in 2027, so make sure to stay on our email list to be the first to know about all things Stories from the Tribe, including show date, auditions and tickets.
Auditions will be held next spring.
The reviews are in!
Whether from the storytellers themselves or community members, the night was a success:
“A beautiful night with amazing, memorable stories told by incredible women that feed our souls and strengthen our community,” said Tamar Fenton, a first-time storyteller. “ It was an honor to participate and to meet new friends through this process. And, we are so fortunate that Galit, with all her talent, warmth, organizational skills, and care, is leading the way on these impactful storytelling events.”
Said Maayanot Community Mikveh of Minnesota founder and Mount Zion Cantor Rachel Stock Spilker: “Events like Stories from the Tribe highlight just how wonderful, dynamic, and unique our Jewish community is in Minnesota and why we chose to make this our home, despite the fact that we came here for ‘just two years’ 29 years ago! The stories and the voices of the women who shared last night are still running through my head, as is the feeling of liveliness and community I felt in the gathering after.”
From beginning to end, this show upholds another one of TC Jewfolk’s core values: Storytelling, SIPUR SIPURIM.
As an organization, we believe that we have a sacred obligation to link past and future by sharing the Jewish stories of today.
And that’s exactly what we did – and will continue doing – together!
Our photographer, Sydnee Bickett Photography, captured small moments at the show.
I want to share just a few of them with you so that you can have a glimpse of what the evening felt like.
