Free Tickets to the 2009 Twin Cities Jewish Book Fair Events

This isn’t just a book fair for Bubbes – some of the books are controversial, and several are written by women closer to our age bracket than that of our mothers. This is the 28th year of the Twin Cities Jewish Book Fair and these 9 authors (6 in November, 3 this spring) join the ranks of more than 250 nationally known Jewish authors who have come to the Twin Cities to speak about their books at this event over the last several decades.

Shavua Tov: This Week’s Jewish News

Shavua Tov! This week’s Jewish news in review is a mix from the political (hate crimes bill passes) to the nonsensical (bagel-shaped mutilations), and everything in between. Here’s TC Jewfolk’s list of some of the major – and fun – Jewish news you may have missed this week. Read up

Because Jews come in all colors…

Whether you are rocking out to Joshua Nelson sing Hebrew gospel music, watching Ethiopian Jews dancing wildly to the Israeli tunes, or dancing salsa steps with Shira Schwartz at the Saint Paul Jewish Community Center, there’s no question that the diversity of Jewish experiences and culture only heightens what it means to be Jewish in America.

Judaism and Gossip: Did You Hear About…?

The traditional litany of sins listed in the liturgy of the Day of Atonement includes no fewer than 11 transgressions related to speech and gossip. TMZ’s Harvey Levin (Jewish) makes a living by publicizing the embarrassing moments in the lives of celebrities. I wonder what kind of confessional he offered last Yom Kippur.

New Contributor: Sean Herstein

In these posts I will strive to present Judaism in a values based, non-judgmental light. Hopefully you find them meaningful and if you feel inspired, please ask a question, offer your own thoughts, or simply say that you appreciate what you are reading.

Alef List: Hot Happenings 4 Hip Jews 10/20-11/2

There are a number of interesting things happening in the next two weeks, Jewish and not. Besides a few parties, a class or two, and some other worthwhile events, some will be watching the Vikings closely, others just getting over our Twins hangover. Still others among us, I’m certain, are a little Jew’d out. After Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, we had a week of Sukkot and recently concluded with Shmini Atzeret and Simhat Torah. Is it little wonder that we have no holidays in the month of Cheshvan (or we can debate Jeroboam’s Feast on the 15th)? Here are my picks from October 20th through November 2nd.

Announcing “Alef List”: Highlighting the coolest Jewish events in Minneapolis and St. Paul

The “Alef List” is TC Jewfolk’s A-list. Every other Tuesday I’ll highlight the best of what’s coming up to save you the trouble of wading through it all. I’ll keep an eye on all of the community calendars and cultural listings so you don’t have to. My goal is to let you know about coolest Jewish things, whether they are taking place at a local Jewish Community Center, synagogue, at First Ave, or at an Uptown Minneapolis hot spot. If it’s even peripherally Jewish, it’s game.

Free tickets and discount to see “Moonlight and Magnolias” at the Minnesota Jewish Theatre

The Minnesota Jewish Theatre Company is kicking off its 15th anniversary season on October 24th with the regional premiere of Ron Hutchinson’s “Moonlight and Magnolias,” a new comedy hit that tells the true behind-the-scenes story of the American movie classic “Gone with the Wind.” TC Jewfolk readers get a special discount to see the show, and one lucky reader gets a free pair of tickets.

Shavua Tov: This Week’s Jewish News

In case you missed the drama, here are a handful of Jewish news stories that we couldn’t fit on the blog last week – from Nazi comparisons in the health care debate, to future JAPs in Jeeps, to the sex crimes in New York City’s ultra Orthodox community.

Young Leadership of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation – Defying Segmentation

This is just a sampling of how being active in Young Leadership has affected my life. But no matter what you are looking for, whether it’s networking, friendship, dating, volunteering opportunities, etc., there are people and possibilities here ready to make a difference in your life. That’s because all of us come to the Federation for different reasons, from different backgrounds, and each has a unique story. So when we all come together, we don’t partition ourselves into little sub-segments of clearly defined characteristics, we interact, make new connections, and broaden our own experience.
